Evolution of God? 

To explain what I mean by the Evolution of God, I must clarify the terms God and Evolution. Although the term means many different things to many different people, to me "God" is the sacred name for Ultimate Reality.  By evolution, I mean change over time as mainstream science understands it. So the Evolution of God simply means that Ultimate Reality changes over time.

So what I mean by the Evolution of God is that Ultimate Reality changes over time and that new properties of this Ultimate Realtiy emerge over time.  Shortly after the Great Radiance (a.k.a. the Big Bang) Ultimate Reality was space, time and energy. There was no matter, no life, no self-reflection, no compassion. Soon after the Great Radiance, matter emerged from energy, followed after a long time by life's emergence from matter. Later, consciousness emerged from life and then self-reflection emerged from consciousness. At some point, compassion emerged, as did other attributes that religions traditionally associate with God.

Some people think the phrase “God Evolves” appeals to a tiny audience. The term "God" alienates many scientists and atheists, and the concept of evolution alienates many Christians.  

But when I define my terms, people suddenly see that the Evolution of God makes sense.

Surprisingly, most people I have talked to about this idea have given it consideration and appreciate the new perspective. When I elaborate, they get it. The idea makes sense. It makes so much intuitive sense that some know it before I say it. I have spoken to atheists, to liberal Christians, to scientists, to agnostics. And recently I spoke to a Christian who interprets the Bible literally. He seemed to get it.

The idea that God Evolves seized me over 10 years ago and will not let me go.  This organizing principle makes sense of most everything, including science and spirituality.
